How to Stop Sweat Patches in 10 Easy Steps

Have you ever been in a situation where you wish you knew how to stop sweat patches? It can be extremely embarrassing to look in the bathroom mirror and see big pit stains.

You're angry that your shirt is ruined, your deodorant hasn't worked, could have potential unwanted body odour, and as much as you’ve tried, the pit marks just don’t go away when dried under the hand drier!

If you’re unsure how to prevent sweat stains, our experts have shared 10 tips to try to help you stay smelling fresh, feeling dry, and pit stain-free all day long.

How to stop sweat patches in 10 easy steps

These are 10 simple ways you can use to stop getting sweat patches.

1. Loose-fitting clothing

As much as tight-fitting clothing may suit the aesthetic, looser fabrics have less chance to grab onto any sweat leading to fewer sweat patches as they aren’t right against your skin.

Especially if you opt for breathable materials such as linen and cotton, the sweat can more easily evaporate so there will be less chance of sweat stains.

2. Trim or shave underarms

Although hairy underarms don’t make you smell worse, they can be a cause of sweat patches. Moisture from sweat can get trapped in the hair which when rubbed against your T-shirt can lead to sweat stains.

Therefore, you may consider shaving or trimming the hair under your armpits to prevent any sweat patches.

3. Stay hydrated

We all know it’s important to drink plenty of water each day, but staying hydrated keeps your body cooler meaning there’s less chance of sweating.

If you’re not the biggest fan of water, why not opt for foods that have a high amount of water, such as:

  • Strawberries
  • Cucumber
  • Melon
  • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes
  • Apples

4. Wait after showering

Waiting to get dressed after showering can help to prevent sweat patches… and not just because of the difficulty of getting jeans on after a shower!

Especially if you’re a fan of hot showers, waiting a couple of minutes to get changed gives your body the chance to cool down and stop you from getting all sweaty again just after you’ve showered.

5. Avoid spicy food

Most of us have experienced sweating after eating spicy foods like curries. This is because our bodies are trying to cool us down after the heat.

However, you could be one of the few who suffer from gustatory hyperhidrosis - sometimes known as Fred’s syndrome. If you find yourself sweating after every meal, this could be you and it may be best to avoid overly spiced food.

6. Don’t overdo the deodorant

We know what you’re thinking: Surely if you’re sweating, you need more deodorant?

You probably need a higher-performing deodorant rather than more swipes of deodorant. This is because too much deodorant can also lead to sweat patches due to residue build-up.

Plus, having too much on can make it more difficult to remove deodorant stains in the future.

7. Cut down your caffeine intake

As much as we all love a coffee - hot or iced - it can increase the amount you sweat. Caffeine raises your nervous system, blood pressure, and heart rate which activate your sweat glands.

Perhaps opt for a decaf for your next coffee fix?

8. Try botox injections

Sweating isn’t bad for you, but can cause embarrassment and discomfort if it is consistent and feels uncontrollable no matter the deodorant or antiperspirant you opt for.

If you do have hyperhidrosis, botox injections could offer some much longed for relief. However, these are usually a last resort solution due to the price and waiting lists.

9. Avoid alcohol

In a similar way to caffeine, alcohol can trigger your sweat glands to produce more sweat to cool your body down. Some people are also more sensitive to alcohol, which can cause them to sweat even more!

Therefore, avoiding alcoholic beverages or simply limiting your intake can help to stop sweating, and subsequently, sweat patches.

10. Effective antiperspirant

Perhaps the easiest and most effective way of preventing sweat patches is having a reliable antiperspirant. Our natural-based antiperspirant is designed with a high-performing formula that has been dermatologically tested for even the most sensitive skin.
